Tonight’s field trip to Watford’s Coliseum is a reconnaissance mission for Nick and his St Christopher orchestra. Theirs
is a special performance of the entire ‘Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ very soon in Letchworth Garden City so the crew are here to pick up some essential clues.
It is the first time any of us
have heard an entire set of Beatles songs live and direct!
Described as the world's most successful and longest running tribute band, the Bootleg Beatles have been touring longer than the original Beatles
ever did themselves!
They are: Neil Harrison (John Lennon); Andre Barreau (George Harrison); David Catlin-Birch (Paul McCartney) and Hugo Degenhardt (Ringo Starr).
Costume, instrument and mood changes
abound in this whirlwind show retracing world and Beatle history from 1963 to 1970 in four sections. Each section is cleverly introduced through a short video vignette depicting the key world events from that
particular time.
It’s a roller coaster of hit after hit after hit. We start with the sharp-cut suits of the ‘Fab Four’ performing songs like ‘Love me do’, ‘She loves you’ and ‘I want to hold
your hand’. This leads us neatly to ‘Yellow Submarine’ and ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’ through to ‘Sgt Pepper’ and ‘Magical Mystery Tour’. In the end, George dons denim and a Gibson SG and John,
long locks for the ‘White’ album finale of ‘Get back’ and ‘Hey Jude’.
The Bootleg Beatles may not be the real thing but they capture perfectly what Lennon, McCartney, Harrison and Starr were all
about musically in their peak period. For a night of great songs, fond memories and a diverse yet thoroughly entertaining show, check out the Bootleg Beatles next time they visit a town near you!
