The Sweet The Corn Exchange, Cambridge. 11 March 2005.

This was a much improved show albeit the Corn Exchange was barely a third full. Thankfully, none of the stowaway gremlins
who’d disrupted the gig ten days earlier at the Derngate survived the voyage to Cambridge. Sailor’s set was slick, engaging and highly entertaining not least because the band refused to
take themselves or the occasion too seriously. Nonetheless, it was a workmanlike performance which really got the crowd going.

Once again, the highlight of the set was the band’s unique arrangement of ‘Karma Chameleon’. The
Rubettes
followed on reshuffling the order of their material. ‘Baby I know’ was again the stand-out track with their accappella medley coming a close second. Sadly, ‘After the goldrush’ and their extended drumming interlude, both repeats from the last ‘Glitz, Blitz and Hitz’ tour were less successful, almost in danger of becoming glitches, hitches and misses.

The Sweet rose to the occasion with true professionalism. Andy, Bruce, Steve and Tony gave their all and rocked the
jubilant and appreciative audience. It was just disappointing that we couldn’t organise a larger welcoming committee. This current tour is being curtailed with many of the remaining shows already
cancelled.

Perhaps the timing was too soon since the last tour? Or the combined bill did not generate sufficient interest and with it
ticket sales at a level that all concerned required? Or, generally, there is less cash around and people have been tightening their belts? Perhaps a little of all three came into play?
Nevertheless, the concept of a ‘Glitz, Blitz and Hitz’ show is a very good one. Certainly, a bill bringing together accomplished acts like Trextasy, Slade and The Sweet would whet the
public’s appetite again.
