Gillie Nicholls is an accomplished folk singer, guitarist and songwriter. Performing solo tonight at
Worcester’s Huntingdon Hall with its church pews, she’s the support act for glam rockers, The Sweet. What? I kid you not!
It’s a challenge she pulls off without the use of prayer mats to great applause.
She wins new friends. What draws me to her music is its harmonic base. It’s more akin to jazz than folk but who needs labels anyway? It’s all music and good stuff.
Showcasing songs from her recent
‘Vital Signs’ album, she plays a short set including ‘Too much to the past’, ‘Breathe in’ and the excellent ‘Free’. She kindly autographs a copy of the CD for me after the show.
Back home the
music sings some more. Fusible John Etheridge guests on a few tracks. I particularly enjoy his Belew guitar antics on ‘I just want to see the light’. Sticks man Steve Rodford’s there too, son of Argent’s Jim
the Bass!
