Ted Nugent is back on manoeuvres in Europe. From his base ‘Tedquarters’, a
2,000-acre estate in Michigan, he’s landed in the East Midlands for a show at Nottingham’s infamous RockCity. Nugent nut and school pal Colin and I have made the short trip up the motorway to cheer him on.
The stage is festooned with military references and, of course, the stars and stripes. Appropriately, the walk-on music is ‘America f*@# yeah!’ taken from the soundtrack of spoof puppet movie ‘Team
America’.
Uncle Ted’s in an expansive mood tonight thanking the Brits for their sterling support for the war and the President. He is, as ever, the model of political incorrectness taking a pot shot at
just about everyone including himself. He laughs and jokes with the audience, a natural performer and, very much, the entertainer.
Nugent is ably backed by Barry Sparks on bass and drummer Mick Brown as they
march through a battery of Nugent’s best tunes at a blistering rate.
It’s great to hear numbers like ‘Free for all’, ‘Dog eat Dog’ and ‘Wang Dang Sweet Poontang’. But the highlight for me is
without doubt, Ted’s signature tune ‘Cat Scratch Fever’ with its timeless anthemic riff. Not for the squeamish.
