Pat Travers The Robin 2, Bilston, 22 November 2006

Canadian guitar maestro Pat Travers packs a good punch and tonight’s no exception to the rule. Gwyn Ashton, last seen here supporting Robin Trower in the spring, warms up the crowd.

It’s the first time in ages Pat’s brought a four-piece band to the UK. This short tour features Kirk McKim on guitar, Eric Frates on drums and Frank on bass, that extra guitar making all the difference.

The fabulous ‘Hooked on Music’ is Pat’s signature opening tune. It rocks. Followed, straight in, by ‘Life in London’ recalling the early part of Pat’s career and his then residency here in the UK.

The 13-song set is a combination of the old and the new with three cuts from 2005’s ‘PT=MC²’. The highlight for me is ‘Crash and Burn’ played tonight, obviously, without the aid of keyboards. Just as good, if not, better!

I can do without bottleneck blues covers though [‘Red House’ etc]. It seems such a waste when you have so much of your own material to choose from.

Wouldn’t it be great to see Pat touring the UK and States on a guitar fest double-bill with the man himself, the incomparable Robin Trower?

In the house tonight – Dunc Springall, Steve and Craig Turton, the ever Trowertastic Pete Allen and Life Café John!
